Alberta Council of Disability Services

Building Capacity Through Training and Development

ACDS' training and development programs are designed to increase the knowledge and skills of community disability services staff to deliver quality services to individuals with developmental disabilities. Our programs support frontline staff, middle management, leadership, and trainers in the field.

What We Offer

From foundational training for new staff to specialized programs addressing complex behavioural needs, we cover a wide range of essential topics. Our offerings also include online courses focused on community inclusion, non-violent crisis intervention techniques that meet CET standards, and comprehensive year-long certification in trauma-informed abuse investigation. We also offer comprehensive tutor training to allow service providers to offer training in-house.

Delivery Methods

We offer training through three delivery methods:
  • Virtual training: hosted via Zoom communications over two to three days. All previous in-person training is currently being held virtually.
  • Online training: ongoing courses that can be started and completed online at a learner’s own pace. Materials are delivered through an online learning management system (Moodle)
  • Face-to-face training: an in-service tutor facilitates learning and evaluation of core ACDS courses (Foundations in Community Disability Studies and Positive Behaviour Support) within their organization. Learners register through ACDS and manuals are distributed by ACDS before a tutor facilitates a session.

For additional learning materials to complement ACDS training programs, explore our T&D resources page, which includes essential tools such as the Safe Bathing and Showering Training Manual, Harm Reduction Toolkit, and Succession Planning Framework.
